Alpharetta, GA Tree Removal Tree Density Calculator
To meet the required tree density or canopy coverage, trees present on the property or in the right-of-way in front of the property can be counted. The standard tree density calculation used to determine the required tree density is 130 inches per acre. The formula used to calculate the Required Tree Density on all properties in the city is as follows: SDF – EDF = RDF where SDF is the Site Density Factor, which is the minimum tree density required in inches per acre and is calculated by multiplying the number of acres by 130 inches. EDF is the Existing Density Factor, which is the density of the existing trees to be conserved, measured in inches at DBH (Diameter at Breast Height). RDF is the Replacement Density Factor, which is the density in inches of new trees to be planted on the property.
For example A, which is a 15,000 square foot lot (.34 acres), the SDF is calculated as 44.2 inches by multiplying 0.34 acres by 130 inches. If there are no existing trees, then the RDF is also 44.2 inches, which means 11 – 4” caliper trees or 22 – 2” caliper trees need to be planted. If there are two existing 15” trees, then the EDF is 30 inches (two trees x 15 inches), and the RDF is 14.2 inches, which means three 4” caliper trees and one 2” caliper tree need to be planted.
For example B, which is a 4,000 square foot lot (.09 acres), the SDF is calculated as 11.7 inches by multiplying 0.09 acres by 130 inches. If there are no existing trees, then the RDF is also 11.7 inches, which means three 4” caliper trees or six 2” caliper trees need to be planted. If there is one existing 8” tree, then the EDF is 8 inches, and the RDF is 3.7 inches, which means one 4” caliper tree or two 2” caliper trees need to be planted.
